Law enforcement, police tactical teams, corrections officers, military forces (U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy) require less-lethal tools, such as tasers, pepper spray, and less-lethal shotguns to deescalate situations (crowd control, protests, riots, suicidal persons), to momentarily incapacitate violent, non-compliant subjects and subjects armed with edged weapons (knife/blunt/impact weapons), with the goal of creating safer interactions with the communities they serve.

A trend of using non lethal shotguns as a less-lethal weapon is beginning to be adopted by cities and counties across the country. Some organizations are re-purposing shotguns by fitting them with orange butt-stocks labeled “less-lethal” and orange fore-grip/fore-ends and less-lethal ammunition (drag stabilized bean bags rounds and rubber buckshot). This poses the danger of an accidental use of live rounds, thus the 1216 Ringfire™  is a safer solution.

The more less-lethal tools are available to law enforcement, the safer situations will become. When other non-lethal options are not effective, and subjects are between 20 and 75 feet away, the less-lethal shotgun gives officers the time and distance to communicate and de-escalate before discharging a less-lethal round, with the objective of gaining compliance.

Policies should be drafted to define when, how, and on whom less-lethal shotguns should be used, to prevent turning them into lethal force and with the purpose to always deescalate volatile situations more safely.
